It was 100 years ago that training of telecommunications for the Imperial Navy started at Flensburg on the initiative of Secretary Admiral von Tirpitz. As of 1st October 1901, the training of radio telegraphy personnel was effected on board the torpedo training ships "SMS FRIEDRICH CARL" and "SMS BLÜCHER", sailing the Flensburg Fjord for torpedo and radio telegraphy exercises.

On 30th November 1902, "SMS BLÜCHER" was moved to Flensburg-Mürwik and given permanent berth alongside pier to serve as a training installation for the radio telegraphy courses starting on 1st December 1902. Since then all personnel for radio, signal and telegraph services as well as technicians of the fleets of the Kaiserliche Marine, Reichsmarine, Kriegsmarine, Bundesmarine, and today’s German Navy received their training at Flensburg- Mürwik.

After 100 years of training at Flensburg-Mürwik and 46 years of existence of the Naval Communications School, the training of naval communication specialists was transferred to another historical site, the Naval Operations School in Bremerhaven. It was here that in 1889 the Naval Telegraph School at Lehe commenced its first wire telegraphy training courses for the telegraph systems on naval fortresses. Meanwhile, the German Federal Army has established its new Training Center for Strategic Reconnaissance on the premises of the Naval Communications School.

In close cooperation with the Naval Communications School and the DL0MFS amateur radio group, the Marinefunker-Runde e.V. - a society of active and former radio operators of the German navies and merchant navy - has initiated a special amateur radio activity to commemorate the centenary event and to celebrate 25 years of its own existence. Also the MF-Runde e.V. issues a special jubilee award to be obtained by licensed radio amateurs and short wave listeners. For details please see the special pages on this website.
