A little greeting at the hotel
Sunday, Oct 13th 2019, we visited Portsmouth and were taken by surprise.
Portsmouth old town - bus 15+16 over
We took bus number 16 to Old Portsmouth. Here we got as far as the Anglican Cathedral with
the seat of the Bishop of Portsmouth. There after, the road was closed.
Only a little later did we realise why.
There were participants in the annual service on 13th October for seafarers who had lost
their lives at sea, and to commemorate the life of Lord Nelson.
The Lord Mayor, Cllr David Fuller, was accompnied by Hampshire's Deputy Lt,
Admiral Sir Philip Jones KCB, the Mayors of Gosport, Havant and Fareham, to the service
at Portsmouth's Anglican Cathedral in Old Portsmouth at 10.30am which was held by the
Dean of Portsmouth, Dr Anthony Cane.
Also Senior Royal Navy officers were to attend the Cathedral service whith a collection to be
taken for the 'Sailors Society'.
After service, all participants should walk to the statue of Admiral Lord Nelson in Grand Parade,
Old Portsmouth, where the Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire would lead the wreath-laying ceremony at
the memorial. Then Portsmouth's Lord Major would go to the seafront to present a wreath to the
sea to commemorate all those whose lives were lost at sea.
But we did not see that then.
